Just a few years ago this was one of China’s goriest markets, where you’d see everything you could imagine and more – from dogs and dried seahorses to scorpions and snakes! The market opened in 1979 and flourished under economic reforms, but in the 1990s it became renowned for the availability of endangered animal parts and the government instituted a crackdown. This has seen many of the stalls, which were spread out over a network of streets, moved into one central building on Liuersan Lu, which primarily sells dried goods and herbs. But, while not as stomach-churning as it once was, in the streets around. The building you’ll still see scorpions being carefully picked out of plastic bowls using chopsticks, live eels being sliced in two, and bags of frogs, snakes and turtles. On the footbridge leading from Qingping to Shamian you’ll also see tiger parts for sale, and, whether genuine of otherwise, interest is alarmingly keen.
